Council tax Council tax band reduction for disabilities

If you or someone you live with has a disability, you may be entitled to a reduction in the amount of council tax you pay.

As long as the various conditions are fulfilled, people with any type of disability can qualify for a reduction. Please be advised that a council visiting officer is required to make a visit to the property.

Qualifying criteria

As long as the various conditions are fulfilled, people with any type of disability can qualify for a reduction. Please be advised that a council visiting officer is required to make a visit to the property.

To qualify for a reduction, the disabled person:

  • Can be an adult or a child
  • Is substantially or permanently disabled
  • Must live at the property

In addition, your home must have at least one of the following:

  • An additional bathroom or kitchen which is required to meet the disabled person's needs
  • An additional room (not a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory), which is predominantly used by the disabled person and is required to meet their needs
  • Sufficient floor space for the disabled person to use a wheelchair

The property must contain certain features that are "essential or of major importance" to the wellbeing of the person living in the dwelling because of the nature of their disability.
