Becoming a registered childminder

  • Would you like to work from your own home, choosing the hours you work and the services you provide in a career where no two days are the same?
  • Could you provide a home environment that is safe and stimulating, providing lots of opportunities for children to play, explore and develop?
  • Can you offer childcare provision, which is professional, flexible and able to meet the needs of individual families?

If so, becoming a registered childminder maybe for you!

Anyone who looks after one or more children under the age of eight in England, to whom they're not related, on domestic premises, for reward, and for a total of more than two hours in any day must register with Ofsted as a childminder.

Working in childcare is extremely rewarding and worthwhile. It is a professional career which provides children and their families with much needed and valued services.

There is now no longer a requirement by Ofsted for childminders to complete a course on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), prior to registration. Further information on the recent changes to the EYFS (2024) can be found here. The link to the recently published EYFS statutory framework for childminders can be found under related information. However, you will be expected to comply with other legislation such as registering your business with HMRC (HN Revenue and Customs).
