Voluntary Car Service

The Voluntary Car Service (VCS) is made up of a team of dedicated volunteer drivers whose role is to provide transport for people with special requirements. The VCS is managed by Passenger Transport Services at Shirehall in Shrewsbury. Currently, there are around 75 volunteer drivers who, between them, cover journeys within and outside of Shropshire. The volunteers carry out a number of regular journeys, such as taking a child with special needs from home to school or driving an elderly person to a day centre.  Drivers provide a stable, caring service for local people, and are able to forge excellent relationships with passengers.

Would you like to volunteer?

Volunteers can spend as much or as little time as they would like. No formal training is required, but drivers must be medically fit to drive in accordance with DVLA requirements. All volunteers will need to undertake a council driver assessment (this is arranged by us as part of the registration process).

You'll need to provide two character references, and must satisfy a disclosure and barring check. The HM Revenues and Customs website has some helpful information on volunteer drivers.

If you're interested in registering as a volunteer driver, contact our voluntary car co-ordinator on 01743 255613, or you can download the relevant application form.
