Following the recent approval of the planning application to expand Shrewsbury College at its London Road campus, Shropshire Council, as the local highway authority, has decided to prohibit motor vehicular access between A458 Wenlock Road and New College Road on an experimental basis, for up to 18 months.

This proposal follows a request from the residents of New College Road to close off access at one end so as to prevent disturbance from inappropriate driving associated with vehicles using the college car park located opposite their road. Given that the car park is due to be expanded, funding was sought from the College for this closure as part of their planning approval under s106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

Because of its relatively narrow width, New College Road does not provide an appropriate route for cross-over trips between Wenlock Road and London Road, so this change will remove ‘through trips’ on this street.  A permanent closure was proposed and consulted on in 2014, and the matter was referred to the Central Planning Committee on 11/12/15.  It was resolved not to proceed with the permanent closure, but to implement an experimental closure instead.  For further information please refer to the minutes of the Central Planning Committee meeting.
