Title of Scheme

Racecourse Lane, Shrewsbury - Closure to Motor Vehicles

Description

Following concerns from the local community over road safety and traffic volumes along Racecourse Lane, Shropshire Council proposes to introduce a permanent closure by placing bollards across the road to the south of Lambourn Drive. Turning facilities for vehicles are also proposed. Local ‘through traffic’ movements would then use either Gains Park Way, Shelton Road or the A5, which are more suitable routes for this type of traffic.

Due to the number of planned and current developments in the western area of Shrewsbury, there are concerns that unless action is taken traffic flows along Racecourse Lane will increase and this could result in the lane being less safe for all road users. These proposals have been subject to a recent informal consultation with local residents and stakeholders and the results of this showed a strong level of support for the closure by the local community.

Waiting restrictions are included as part of the proposals to protect the turning facilities from obstructive parking. Also, should the closure go ahead the existing weight limit for Racecourse Lane would be revoked as this would no longer be valid because through traffic would not be able to use the lane.
